PEAR JAM

Sweet, fragrant, and spiced just right — this pear jam is like a cozy hug in a jar. It’s made with ripe pears, warm spices, and coconut sugar instead of refined sweeteners, making it a more wholesome treat you’ll feel good about serving on toast, swirled into yogurt, or paired with cheese.

This isn’t your average jam. It’s soft, spoon able, and spiced with cinnamon, ginger, and all spice — giving it that special something that turns every bite into a little celebration of the season.

There are many uniquely human experiences. Of the more infuriating ones is to look high and low for your cellphone or sunglasses, to strip your couch to its frame and turn your backpack inside out, only to sheepishly find that they were laughably within reach all along. The phone is in your pocket. The sunglasses are on your head.

I feel similarly during pear season. The first few weeks of July, I visit our new land and got a beautiful pears of the tree. So much joy I saw that kids had while picking the fruit.

A pile of ripe pears with red and green speckled skin fills the frame, creating a colorful and natural texture.

The summer pears that cover those old tree, meanwhile, look back at me with pity.

The summer delights have been blunted by their ubiquity, a forgone conclusion to anyone who frequents a big grocery store. No longer! Whether you’re growing them yourself or picking them up from a farm stand, the best summer pears are abundant right now.

Summer pears

There’s something magical about the aroma of simmering pears filling the kitchen. This homemade pear jam is my way of capturing the essence of late summer and early fall in a jar. Made with not-quite-ripe pears for the perfect texture, gently sweetened with coconut sugar (or honey or maple syrup if you prefer), and spiced with cinnamon, ginger, and allspice, it’s a naturally delicious treat you’ll want to spread on everything.

I love that this jam comes together in just 30 minutes and doesn’t require store-bought pectin — pears are naturally high in pectin, so the jam thickens beautifully on its own. It’s a healthier take on a classic recipe, free from refined sugar but full of rich, cozy flavors. Perfect for toast, oatmeal, pancakes, or even as a glaze for meats, this recipe is one you’ll want to make again and again.

Ingredients:

  • 3 & 1/2 lbs. ideally not-quite-ripe pears (any kind will work here, I used Starkrimson)

  • 1 1/4 cups coconut sugar (adjust to taste, or substitute with honey or maple syrup)

  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp ginger powder

  • 1/2 tsp allspice

Directions:

  1. Peel, core, and chop the pears. (I recommend not over-peeling — I did a partial peel, and it was perfect.)

  2. Place the pears in a heavy-bottomed pot (I used a Dutch oven) along with the sugar, lemon juice, and spices.

  3. Cook over low heat for about 15 minutes with the lid on.

  4. Remove the lid and use a potato masher to smash the softened pears.

  5. Simmer uncovered for another 10–15 minutes, then turn off the heat and let cool. The mixture will thicken as it cools. Don’t worry if it seems a bit loose — pears are naturally high in pectin, and the texture will be perfect once it reaches room temperature.

  6. Pour into small mason jars and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks, or freeze for longer storage.

Enjoy! 🍐
